The earth was lit by the sun from overhead, clear autumn sunlight streaming through colorful trees that still retained their dying leaves. Here and there a bold pine stood out as a dark green sentry against the orange and red rain that fell when a breeze made the limbs rattle. Gushing water added a soothing background noise to the occasional rattle of moving leaves, continuing steadily along its course as the river wound away from the nearby falls that thundered in the distance. A bend in the river created a small area of land jutting out into the waters rushing by. On the edge of this area sat a snow-white she-wolf staring at the waters moving past her paws by the width of a grass blade.
Eyes nearly crossed in concentration, the wolf glared at the water before her. Every muscle was taught with focus, jaws clenched. To a passerby this would be an unusual, almost comic scene but that prospect when unnoticed by Aydan. Instead the fae poured all her focus and energy into glaring at the water. She was trying to freeze it without touching it but so far it wasn't working very well. Since just after dawn she'd been at this task. Everyday she set a task, a challenge for herself since her father could no longer try to teach her. Today, her task was freezing just a part of the water, near the bank but not by touching it.
The problem with this task? Her powers were erratic. That was why they were dangerous. Aydan knew that fact all too well, sickeningly well and it made her stomach churn at the very thought of how dangerous her powers were. Forcing the thought away, Adyan locked down her squirming belly, determined to freeze the water. Her powers were erratic, dangerous, deadly, unreliable. She wanted to change that, she wanted it so badly it hurt all the time. The problem was when she did things like this, her powers when they did work, were weak, maybe a flake of frozen water that evaporated as soon as it was made. She couldn't make snow from rain but instead made slush. Yet when she had nightmares or wasn't focusing, her powers lashed out in unexpecting ways that left her drained and tired, terrified to try again.
I need help, Aydan thought as she glared at the water. But who will help me? She couldn't do much since about the day he left. Her light and ice elements were no use. . The alphess needed help. She wanted to tell Judge how much she loved him but he probably likes her snobby sister. Enough about her, I was the first-born and I'm proud. Her paws sweeped down away from the river sitting down as the sunlight hitting her coat making her a bit glamorous than before.
